Thu, 04/11/2013 - 09:58
More than 500 people packed into Souris Consolidated School on Thursday night to discuss changes to Souris Hospital with Health Minister Doug Currie. There were questions, standing ovations, and uproarious boos as the meeting went an hour later than scheduled. Souris’ own doctor, Ron Henbest, spoke against the Department of Health’s proposed changes to Souris Hospital. The Better Access, Better Care model would have Souris Hospital act as an alternative level of care unit, but Dr Henbest said his training has always taught closer access is better care. “People like to be cared for close to home,” he said. Dr Henbest said Souris Hospital is ...

Infrastructure fund a raw deal, say towns

Wed, 04/10/2013 - 05:20
The province’s $1.8 million infrastructure fund to compensate municipalities for the HST verges between irrelevant and nonsensical, according to the administrators of Georgetown and Montague. The two issues are like comparing apples and oranges, Georgetown CAO Tonya Cameron said. “It’s great the $1.8 million is available, but again it has nothing to do with HST as far as I’m concerned,” Ms Cameron said. Montague CAO Andy Daggett agreed. “In talking to my counterparts, we’re all rolling our eyes and raising our eyebrows, going, that doesn’t make any sense. Why are you going through all of this?” PEI municipalities had asked the province to reimburse them ...

The idea is to make the festival more fun, interesting and enjoyable for the public and tourists. “I hope to have a better Summer Days this year,” she said. Workers reeling over Mariner closure

Wed, 04/10/2013 - 05:20
The closure of Mariner Seafoods in Brudenell will leave about 100 plant workers without jobs this spring. Some workers received phone calls from the fish processing plant back in March asking if they’d return to work but a second call early this week reneged on any job offers. Mariner processed snow crab, rock crab, lobster, hake, herring, flounder, and scallops. Beverley Blaisdell of Upton, who worked for Mariner last year, said the news is short notice. “I got a call about three weeks to a month ago asking if I was going back to work,” she said. “It’s very disappointing” Ms Blaisdell has already put ...

Wed, 04/10/2013 - 05:00
This time of year, potholes are a plague on many PEI roads. Maintenance crews can try to fill them in, but the fractures in the pavement inevitably reappear in no time. So there’s better than even odds that you’ve heard and felt that dreaded, spine-snapping ka-thunk while driving down the road. And if that has happened, you may have sustained some damage to the front end of your car, either in the suspension or alignment. The staff at Kings County Chrysler in Brudenell have seen a lot of alignment issues this spring. This is happening at the same time drivers are switching their winter tires ...
