Town officials and the tenants housed inside the Main Street building reacted to notice that Public Works had planned to sell the building earlier this week. “It’s (Montague) the third largest community on the Island. peicanada.com -
Fri, 05/24/2013 - 10:03
Some fishermen at Naufrage Harbour are being forced to deal with a 650 pound quota on the number of market lobsters they land each day because processors and buyers say there’s a glut in the market. After fishermen tied up their boats for a week to protest low prices, some processors and buyers claimed they had to restrict the amount of lobsters they can accept. Victor Daigle, a buyer for North Lake Fisheries 2013 Inc, said the plant introduced the cap Tuesday. “The processors are having a hard time processing what they have,” Mr Daigle said. He said processors want the lobster to ...

Some fishermen say cap on catches is unjustified payback by processors

Wed, 05/22/2013 - 05:20
Unofficial word of a 550 pound per boat cap being introduced by some lobster processors this week has raised the suspicion of at least a couple of eastern PEI fishermen. Processors are alleged to have based their move on a glut of product created by lobster fishermen who returned to the water last Tuesday and Wednesday after an almost week-long protest for higher prices. “I’m aware of the quota, but it sure as hell isn’t affecting me,” Wade Yeo, who fishes out of Montague, said. Mr Yeo suspects fishermen from ports in the western end of the province may be bringing in large ...

Wed, 05/22/2013 - 05:20
The Department of Environment is investigating a case of fishing by prohibited means after finding an illegally placed trawl net in MacLure’s Dam in Murray River. Avid angler David MacLeod, of Murray River, found the net last week. Mr MacLeod was trolling for trout at the popular fishing spot when his hook snagged on something in about eight feet of water. It was a trawl - a large net, usually shaped like a sock, that’s used to catch large quantities of fish at once. “I pulled it into my boat,” Mr MacLeod said. “It looked like it had been there for a while because ...

For the past 17 years, the Jimmy Carroll Memorial Bingo fundraiser has been an annual springtime event in Georgetown. And for the past five years or so lobster fishermen from the area have donated up to 30 pounds of lobster as part of the Bingo prizes. “You hate to ask them for donations they committed to before knowing what kind of situation they’d be in,” said Dawn Kerr, founder of the fundraiser ...

The Town of Montague will map and evaluate its storm drain system this year to determine if any issues exist. “The intent is to start thinking and planning,” Councillor Debbie Johnston said. Additions have been made to the system over the last several decades.
