Dunk Farm Farms was named the top grower in PEI for Cavendish Farms during a banquet held recently by the processor.
A fifth generation potato operation, Dunk River Farms Ltd. is located in Central Bedeque, The farm is operated by Kevin, Paul, David and Elaine Schurman. Potatoes are rotated with cereals and forages on a three year crop rotation.
"Congratulations to Dunk River Farms, a deserving recipient of this award," said Ron Clow, vice president of Cavendish Farms. "Our commitment to quality for our customers begins with our partnership with farmers. The Schurman family's long-standing dedication to growing excellent potatoes is a great example of that partnership."
Each load of potatoes delivered to Cavendish facilities is graded based on a number of different criteria including colour, defects, gravity, cleanliness, and overall professionalism of the grower. Points are allocated for each category and top growers are selected based on their total accumulated points for the crop year.
Dunk River Farms is part of the Innovative Farmers Group—a collection of ten farms in the central PEI area collaborating to address such issues as improving potato and rotational crop production, environmental stewardship, benchmarking, performance of member farms and improving the communication between member farms.
Dunk River Farms is also participating in the Alternate Land User Program and has implemented a number of soil conservation practices such as grassed waterways, terraces and farmable berms, grassed headlands, expanded buffer zones and high slope land retirement.
